United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile test.

This was stated by the spokesman of the United Nations Office in a statement.

Earlier in the day, North Korea fired one of its most powerful ICBMs in a test, which can reportedly land on land in the United States.

"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the launch of another intercontinental-range ballistic missile by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," the statement read.

Guterres reiterated his calls on North Korea to desist from taking further provocative action and to fully comply with its international obligations under all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, as well as to take immediate steps to resume the dialogue which lead to sustainable peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, the statement added.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un verified the operation of the new ICBM together with his wife and daughter.

After the test, he called for the development of more strategic weapons and the training of units equipped with tactical nuclear weapons, state media KCNA said.

The North Korean leader has warned that he will respond to threats from his enemies with the use of nuclear weapons.

According to Kim, the tests confirmed both the reliability and the degree of performance of the new strategic weapon and that his country's nuclear force is capable of deterring any atomic threat.

"Hostile forces require us to expedite the improvement of our nuclear deterrence."
