Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said today, Friday, that his country is ready to hold high-level meetings with the United States on strategic stability if Washington is ready to do so.

Russian official media quoted Ryabkov as saying that Moscow does not rule out holding new contacts with Washington after the upcoming talks in Cairo on the New START nuclear arms treaty.

With regard to the meeting that took place a few days ago in Ankara between the director of Russian intelligence, Sergei Naryshkin, and the director of the CIA, William Burns, Ryabkov explained that it was requested by the American side and discussed sensitive issues.

The Russian official also said that Moscow has nothing to discuss with Washington regarding Ukraine.

Message on the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons

On the other hand, the US National Security Council said that Burns delivered Naryshkin a message regarding the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons by Russia, and the risks of escalation to strategic stability, according to what was reported by the Russian media.

And yesterday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that they do not want to sever diplomatic relations with Washington, but this is what will happen if the latter decides that it does not need relations with Moscow.

For its part, the Turkish presidency said today that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that the meeting between the US and Russian intelligence services is important to prevent "uncontrolled" escalation.

US and Russian officials say that contacts are taking place between the two countries at certain levels to avoid serious incidents, in light of the tensions between the two sides over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
