At the United Nations Conference on Climate Change Countermeasures "COP27" being held in Egypt, Minister of the Environment Nishimura has provided technical support in developing countries to reduce emissions of "methane," which is said to have 25 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide. We introduced the technology of Japan's garbage disposal site, which is promoting the introduction of

Methane, which accounts for about 14% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, is said to have a greenhouse effect 25 times that of carbon dioxide, and its reduction is required worldwide.

On the 16th, at the COP27 venue, Minister of the Environment Nishimura took the podium and introduced technology for waste disposal sites that suppresses the generation of methane, which Japan is introducing as technical assistance to developing countries such as Mozambique in Africa.

This technology is a mechanism that promotes the decomposition of waste by microorganisms and suppresses methane generation by passing pipes that allow air and water to flow underground at the disposal site, and is a standard mechanism for waste disposal in Japan. .

Fukuoka City, which was the first to introduce this technology in Japan, has accepted trainees from various countries, mainly from developing countries, and so far, this "Fukuoka Method" has been introduced in 21 countries in Asia and Africa. .

Minister Nishimura said, "It is necessary to steadily reduce methane emissions from waste disposal sites, where waste and climate change are closely related."

Regarding methane, at COP26 last year, an international framework was launched with the participation of the EU (European Union), the United States, Japan, etc., and set a goal of reducing methane by at least 30% worldwide by 2030. rice field.

At this year's COP, President Biden of the United States announced that he would strengthen regulations in the United States, and the momentum for reducing emissions is increasing internationally.
