Last night, the UN adopted a North Korean human rights resolution condemning human rights violations in North Korea for the 18th consecutive year.

South Korea participated as a co-sponsor for the first time in four years, but North Korea strongly protested that South Korea was using human rights politically to cover up the Itaewon disaster.

The North Korean Human Rights Resolution, which condemns systematic and widespread human rights violations in North Korea and demands improvement, was adopted by the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in charge of human rights issues for 18 consecutive years.

Usually, the UN's North Korean human rights resolution is drafted and submitted to the 3rd Commission led by the European Union, and if passed there, it goes up to the UN General Assembly in December and once again goes through the process of final adoption by unanimous vote of member states.

Korea has participated as a co-sponsor of the resolution for 10 years since 2008, but has not participated since 2019 in consideration of inter-Korean relations.

After four years, when the North Korean human rights resolution was adopted with South Korea also participating, North Korea started to criticize the South Korean government, even mentioning the Itaewon disaster.

[Kim Seong/North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations: Due to the poor administrative power of the South Korean government, there have recently been victims of an unprecedented stampede.

The South Korean government (to avoid criticism for this) does not hesitate to play with human rights issues at the UN and maximize political confrontation.]

Our government also immediately refuted.

[Bae Jong-in/Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations: North Korea's absurd remarks about the tragedy that occurred in South Korea clearly show how ignorant North Korea is about human rights.

While the international community mourned the Itaewon disaster, North Korea continued provocation by firing missiles.]

The South Korean mission to the United Nations also introduced the South Korean government's response to the accident to member countries, saying that the government is doing its best to support victims and prevent a recurrence. .
