Democratic Representative Andre Carson, accompanied by 18 other deputies, submitted a draft resolution called "Justice for Shireen" to the US House of Representatives, to demand an investigation into the killing of colleague Shireen Abu Aqleh, including the definition of the persons or entities that carried out, participated or were involved in her killing.

The draft resolution calls for the issuance of a public report within 30 days of its entry into force, by the head of the FBI and the Secretary of State, in consultation with intelligence and the Secretary of Defense, regarding the assassination of the Al-Jazeera correspondent.

The project also calls for identification of any US-made military materials that may be linked to the assassination of Abu Aqelah.

Contrasting position

On the other hand, Republican Senator Ted Cruz criticized the US Department of Justice for opening an investigation into the killing of Sherine Abu Aqleh while she was covering the activity of the Israeli army in Jenin.

Cruz said, in a statement issued by him, that the Biden administration views Israel and Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu as political enemies and deals with them on this basis by calling them the FBI, as he put it.

Cruz claimed that Israel cooperated closely with the United States in the investigation of Shirin's death from the beginning, and that the State and Defense Ministries had already reached their conclusions, he said.

For its part, Amnesty International welcomed the US Department of Justice's decision to open an investigation into the assassination of colleague Shireen Abu Aqleh.

The Middle East and North Africa official in the organization said that Israel should not be allowed to continue killing Palestinian civilians with impunity, explaining that Shireen was one of 125 Palestinians killed by Israel in the West Bank this year.

Israel is angry

On the other hand, Axios quoted Israeli and American officials as saying that the FBI's decision to open an investigation into the murder of colleague Sherine Abu Aqleh was taken before the November elections in Israel, but the Ministry of Justice informed the Israeli government. Officially 3 days after the election.

The site added that the White House and the US State Department informed the Israeli government that they were not behind the decision to open the investigation.

Axios also quoted Israeli officials as saying that they spoke to all officials in the US administration and explained to them the extent of their anger.

Israeli officials said they had asked the US ambassador to provide details, but he denied knowledge of the investigation and said he would inquire about the matter.

Israeli officials confirmed that they called on the US administration to address the situation before the news of the investigation reached the media, and warned that the matter would turn into a bilateral crisis in the event that this happened.

They added that the Israeli defense minister made an angry call to a high-ranking US official, and made it clear to him that Israel would not cooperate in any way with the FBI investigation.
