A field study conducted by the Department of Welfare and Rehabilitation of the Disabled at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Dubai concluded that 78% of the mentally handicapped in the country face behavioral problems that lessen with age, as a result of their acquisition of experiences that help them adapt to the environment around them.

Among the most prominent of these problems is anxiety, aggression and lying.

The study, a copy of which was obtained by Emirates Today, considered that people with disabilities are more vulnerable to the emergence of this type of problem due to their lack of adaptation to the requirements of the surrounding society, lack of mental or sensory perception, and the difficulty of assessing their capabilities in a manner commensurate with the accepted social behavior.

The researcher and psychologist in the Department of Care and Rehabilitation of the Handicapped at the Ministry, Rawhi Abdat, said that the study sought to clarify the behavioral problems facing the disabled in the country, and to identify the impact of the main variables of the mentally and auditory handicapped, who are enrolled in the care and rehabilitation centers of the handicapped, in the emergence of behavioral problems for him. Pointing out that the results of the study showed more behavioral problems among males than among females, which is consistent with scientific studies that have proven that the prevalence of autism and hyperactivity among males is more than that of females, and reflects the real causes behind behavioral problems.

Abdat reported that 21% of people with intellectual disabilities did not show behavioral problems, while 78% faced various problems, including constant anxiety at 16%, stubbornness and aggression towards others at 11%, and only 7-8% faced the problem of shyness and excessive movement.

He continued, "Behavioral problems worsen according to the severity of the disability. People with minor disabilities who have behavioral problems always lie, because the problem (lying) appears in a person who possesses a method of maneuvering and increased awareness that distinguishes him from people with moderate and severe disabilities, while these showed problems commensurate with With their disability and its severity, including anxiety, shyness and stubbornness.

In another aspect of the study, it was found that 64% of the people with hearing disabilities who were studied had behavioral problems.

Abdat said that most of the dominant behavioral problems for the hearing impaired fall within the framework of shyness and excessive movement at a rate of 14.3%, followed by anxiety at a rate of 10.7%, stubbornness at a rate of 9% and aggression at a rate of 5%, due to the inability of the deaf to communicate with others and the lack of understanding of others, in addition to the lack of understanding of others. Their appearance in front of society, the difficulty of mingling with others and their low participation in activities, due to their weak abilities.

The study reached several recommendations, including paying attention to behavior modification programs directed at the mentally handicapped, as they are the most prevalent group with behavioral problems, preparing psychological and social rehabilitation programs for people with severe disabilities, and supporting their communication with their surroundings, in addition to paying attention to supporting the handicapped from the psychological, emotional and social aspects, and raising The level of self-confidence, integrating them into social activities and programs and giving them the role and opportunity to participate.

The recommendations of the study stressed the necessity of early detection of the initial indicators of behavioral problems of the disabled, and their solution before their aggravation and their impact on the developmental aspects of the disabled, in addition to preparing programs specialized in self-development of the disabled, supporting and motivating them, which reduces anxiety and shyness resulting from deficiencies in their abilities.

The study demanded that the disabled be given the opportunity to express his needs and skills, and develop his tendencies, pointing out that this enhances his adaptation to the surrounding environment, and reduces the severity of the behavioral problems he faces.
