Yesterday, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, participated in the main session of the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of 20 (G20), which began yesterday on the island of Bali in the Republic of Indonesia, and continues until today, under the chairmanship of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and the presence of Leaders of the countries of the group, and a number of representatives of international organizations.

His Highness the President of the State began his speech at the summit by thanking the Indonesian presidency for its great efforts in leading and coordinating the work of the Group of 20, wishing success to the friendly Republic of India in presiding over the group during the next year.

His Highness said, "We believe in the UAE that a balanced approach is the most successful in achieving sustainability," stressing the state's commitment to its responsible role in energy markets and its pioneering agenda in the clean energy sector.

His Highness pointed out that the UAE embodied this commitment through investments worth $50 billion in the field of clean energy, in more than 40 countries around the world, and its establishment of the “Crimea Climate Alliance”, in partnership with the friendly Republic of Indonesia, in addition to its launch of the “Accelerate Transformation” initiative. Developing countries towards sustainable energy”, in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency.

His Highness stressed that the UAE, as a global economic center, will continue to make maximum efforts to ensure the sustainability of food and drug chains, and harness its capabilities, ports and aviation to support food security initiatives and goals.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan thanked the participants in the summit, expressing his aspiration to meet them in the United Arab Emirates next year, within the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived at the G-20 summit yesterday morning, and was received upon his arrival by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, where the two sides exchanged cordial conversations, while his Highness and the Indonesian President took memorial photos.

The official delegation participating with His Highness the President of the State at the summit included His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail bin Muhammad Faraj. Faris Al Mazrouei.

During the summit, the Indonesian president urged the member states of the Group of 20 to "end the war", in a clear reference to the war in Ukraine, during the opening of the group's summit in Bali yesterday, which was overshadowed by the Ukraine war.

Widodo addressed the leaders of the group before the opening session of the summit, saying, “We must end the war.

If the war does not end, it will be difficult for the world to move forward.”

US and European officials saw the summit as evidence of Russia's increasing isolation, expressing their aspiration for the summit to condemn the Russian war on Ukraine and the threat to use nuclear weapons.

But Jakarta, which pursues a neutral foreign policy, rejected Western pressure before the summit not to invite Moscow.

Without naming Russia, President Joko Widodo called on the member states of the group to avoid another cold war between the major powers.

"We must not divide the world into parts, nor allow the world to fall into another cold war," he said.

Russia is represented by its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the summit via video, saying that "now is the time when it is necessary and possible to stop the devastating Russian war," adding, "This will save thousands of lives."

The G20 leaders are meeting in Bali, amid soaring inflation, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, that has pushed millions more to the brink of poverty and many countries to recession.

US allies hope that the economic headwinds generated by the war will bring the countries of the group closer, which though wary about condemning Russia, are deeply concerned about rising prices.

Widodo pointed out that the bloc of the world's major economies must succeed in addressing the world's most urgent crises.

"Today the world is looking at us," he added.

Will we achieve success or will we add another failure?

For me, the G-20 summit must be a success and not a failure.

Speaking at the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for opposing "the politicization of food and energy problems, and turning them into tools and weapons," while at the same time repeating his opposition to Western sanctions policy.

He also called on these countries to limit the repercussions of raising interest rates, at a time when the US Federal Reserve is tightening its policies to counter inflation.

French President Emmanuel Macron, during a meeting with Xi on the sidelines of the summit, called for uniting efforts between Paris and Beijing against the war in Ukraine.

"We must join forces to respond to a global crisis, such as Russia's war in Ukraine," Macron told Xi after shaking hands and starting their talks.

US President Joe Biden had agreed with his Chinese counterpart during talks, Monday, that nuclear weapons should never be used, including Ukraine, the White House announced, Monday.

Many countries plan to enhance their military capabilities.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in Bali, announcing London's request to buy five war frigates, and speaking of a Russian "threat".
