Today, Tuesday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced the arrival of the first medical convoy to the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, following the peace agreement signed in early November between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Liberation Front.

A spokesman for the Committee in Ethiopia said that the first convoy of medical supplies from the Red Cross had arrived in Mekele, the provincial capital.

Earlier in the day, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed - in a speech to parliament representatives - his pledge to abide by the terms of the agreement with the Tigray Front.

"We discussed the agreement and signed it. What is expected of us after that is the implementation of the promise we made sincerely," he said.

The African Union announced earlier this month that the warring parties in Ethiopia agreed to a "permanent cessation" of hostilities, in the two-year-old conflict.

The agreement concluded in South Africa on the second of this November provides for the disarmament of the Tigray Front, and the resumption of aid delivery to the region, which has been suffering from an acute humanitarian crisis since the outbreak of the war.

The parties to the conflict also agreed to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to all those who need it in Tigray and neighboring areas in northern Ethiopia.
