Allowing Italian female representatives to breastfeed their children in Parliament

A committee in the Italian Parliament decided today, Tuesday, to allow future female representatives to take their children to the Chamber of Deputies in Rome and to breastfeed them there.

A rule that does not allow the presence of anyone other than the deputies in the parliament during sessions and voting processes will be amended to allow the presence of infants with their mothers.

A separate small area in the last row will be set aside for mothers in the lower house of parliament to breastfeed their babies.

The Italian news agency ANSA quoted Gilda Sportello, a member of the Five Star Movement party that submitted the proposal, as saying that she hoped the new rule would come into force this year.

"Finally!" wrote Lecia Ronzuli, leader of the conservative party "Forza Italia" in the Senate, on Twitter.

Ronzuli once caused a stir in the European Parliament when she took her daughter Vittoria to the Council.
