Watch... Two planes collide during an air show in Dallas

Two planes collided in mid-air at a World War II memorial air show in the US city of Dallas, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky, federal officials said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber and a Bell B-63 King Cobra fighter collided and crashed at the Wings Over Dallas Air Show at Dulles Airport on Saturday evening.

The American newspaper "Los Angeles Times" reported that it was not yet clear how many people were on board the two planes, or whether there were injuries among people on the ground, and the fate of those on board the two planes is still unknown.

Video clips posted on social media showed the two planes colliding and crashing shortly afterwards and setting fire to them.

Dallas Executive Airport spoke on Twitter of an "accident" during a display of 1940s military aircraft organized over the long weekend.

Officials said both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board had launched investigations.
