The destruction of a historic Florida hotel that hosted Kennedy and the Beatles in the 1960s

A hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, USA, was destroyed on Sunday after being neglected over the past years.

Once the most luxurious hotel in Miami Beach, the hotel hosted the Beatles and President John F. Kennedy during the 1960s.

The 17-storey Hotel Deauville collapsed on itself after set off a series of pre-planned explosions, sending off a large cloud of dust.

The hotel was built in 1957 and Kennedy spoke there to the Young Democrats Convention in 1961.

The Beatles performed there in 1964, recording six songs for "Ed Sullivan", which attracted an estimated television audience of 70 million people.

Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, and Sammy Davis Jr. have performed there.

The property fell apart over the years, and closed in 2017 after a fire due to a short circuit.

Miami Beach officials and the hotel's owners have paid millions of dollars in fines for breaking laws.

Billionaire Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, wanted to buy the property and build a hotel and a 107-meter apartment tower, but his plan did not work.

City officials say Ross may still be interested in buying the land if a plan B can be developed.
