Face to face丨Fun with the "industrial machine"!

Interview with Wu Hongyu, the CNC car champion of the WorldSkills Competition

From mid-September to late November, the 2022 WorldSkills Special Competition will be held in many countries. Among the 27 events that have been completed, the Chinese delegation has won 15 golds, 3 silvers, 3 bronzes and 5 prizes.

Among them, Wu Hongyu from Guangdong Mechanical Technician College won the championship of CNC car project.

Reporter:

After the final result came out, how many more points did you have than the second place?

Wu Hongyu:

Eight points higher than the second place.

Reporter:

Is this gap a big lead or a slight lead?

Wu Hongyu:

This gap belongs to the lead by a large score, because the scores of all the previous world competitions may be only a few tenths of a point. My processing thinking and processing accuracy are completely without problems.

The World Skills Competition, known as the "World Skills Olympics", is held every two years, and its competitive level represents the world's advanced level of today's vocational skills development.

The CNC car project Wu Hongyu participated in belongs to the category of manufacturing and engineering. The test is the ability of the contestants to use CNC cars, a tool with high precision and versatility, to manufacture parts.

CNC lathes are called "industrial mother machines" and are machines that make machines.

The technical level of high-end CNC machine tools is also one of the criteria for measuring a country's core manufacturing capabilities. This CNC car project has contestants from more than 20 countries and regions.

Reporter:

You won the championship. What do you think of the other participants, such as those from very first-class industrialized countries?

Wu Hongyu:

They are also more contemplative, because maybe they think they won the second place, and we won the first place.

Reporter: A

little dissatisfied.

Wu Hongyu:

Yes, but I think the strength has been proved, because it is true that the things I handed over are better than them, and the precision is higher than them, there is no doubt about this.

The twists and turns of the game

This year's WorldSkills Special Competition CNC car project was held in Frankfurt, Germany. As early as three months before the start of the competition, the Guangdong Mechanical Technician College, where Wu Hongyu is located, formed a technical logistics support team for the competition, and went to many cities in Germany to accompany him, including Wu Hongyu. The three players included in the battle all the way.

In order to ensure that Wu Hongyu and other three players participated in the competition, the whole team went to Germany with thousands of various tools weighing more than 500 kilograms.

However, after arriving at the competition site, I was told that some of the tools provided by the competition organization committee must be used.

Wu Hongyu:

The tools he provides are different from the tools I usually train, which will affect some scope of my operation and processing.

Reporter:

The set he provided did not suit you, or did everyone feel uncomfortable?

Wu Hongyu:

I should all feel uncomfortable. Six sets are provided, which can be used by players in six groups. However, each group is not uniform and is randomly assigned. The set I assigned is relatively poor.

Tools are not the only problem. Due to the special situation set in the competition, this competition requires every four players to share one device. After each test, the players need to wait a day and a half before the next test.

There are three modules of assessment in this CNC car competition, which are the cutting of batch parts, assembled parts and single parts.

The examination time for each module is four hours, and it takes up to six days to complete the full competition.

Before the competition, the organizer arranged for the contestants to inspect the machine tool. Shortly after Wu Hongyu inspected the machine parameters, an accident happened. A foreign contestant accidentally collided with the machine tool Wu Hongyu had just inspected.

Wu Hongyu:

I was waiting there in the afternoon after trying out the equipment. A foreign player was trying to get used to the equipment. During the process of getting used to it, I suddenly heard a "bang". He hit the machine tool and had some minor accidents. Very panicked.

I quickly asked our experts and translators to submit an application to the chief expert, can I understand how it was hit, and can I re-familiarize with this equipment.

In the end, the expert's suggestion was that although it crashed, I was already familiar with it, and I had to wait until a special engineer would repair it at night. That's the only way to continue using it for me the next day.

Reporter:

Since an engineer came to repair it the night before, what are you worried about?

Wu Hongyu:

Because each piece of equipment has been repaired, there may be some differences.

Because I was familiar with the equipment on the first day, my purpose is to understand its characteristics and some precision. If it is repaired, it will not be possible to return to the original position, and there will always be some changes.

So I had to spend a little more time the next day to get acquainted with the parameters.

In this way, Wu Hongyu spent the night in anxiety.

The next day, the game started.

For him, the machining of batches is the most challenging of the three module exams, because it is the first exam and it takes more time to get used to the tools and materials.

Reporter:

How long did it take to use this tool that was not easy at first?

Wu Hongyu:

I should spend about ten minutes at the beginning, slow down the speed, and I can fully understand it and adapt to it in the process of slowing down.

Because I also know that if it is fast, it will definitely be more chaotic, so my method is to be steady at the beginning and take it slow.

Let myself master this rhythm, and I will slowly speed up, so I achieve a speed transition from slow to fast, and process it slowly.

Wu Hongyu:

Maybe a foreigner can work on this topic, he can just do it. He has already done it, and I may not finish it a little bit.

But the accuracy and size requirements I made in all aspects are within the regulations, and I can score.

But their words may be done but not scored.

In the end, after all three module competitions were over, Wu Hongyu won the gold medal with a huge advantage of 8 points, and the Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese players tied for the silver medal.

Wu Hongyu:

This time, it can also prove the level of our country's manufacturing industry. Although our equipment is not as good as theirs, our processing technology and processing thinking are stronger than theirs.

Because of some of our operation methods, the workpieces we make are better than them, and the efficiency and precision of our processing parts are higher than theirs.

Reporter:

Why is this possible?

Wu Hongyu:

We will think about it with our hearts. Our country also attaches great importance to coaching experts, because now the country is also focusing on cultivating professional and skilled talents, and also provides a lot of resources, we can also have very good machines to train.

road to skills

Reporter:

When you graduated from junior high school at the age of 16, why didn't you want to go to a serious university, but took the path of vocational education?

Wu Hongyu:

Before junior high school, I liked to disassemble and assemble some small toys at home, which led to my unsatisfactory academic performance.

At that time, I couldn't go to a more ideal high school, and I was more confused.

At that time, my parents also knew that I like to disassemble and assemble these small things, so they discussed with relatives, saying that I was suitable for attending technical colleges.

Reporter:

When you decided to include your family’s decision and let you take the path of vocational education instead of higher education, did you think it was a choice that might be a step back?

Wu Hongyu:

No, at that time, I liked mechanical things more, and it was also my hobby. My parents also knew me and said that if I went to college, I would definitely not be able to sit still, because this is judged according to my own ability. Going to college may not be the best.

Talent and interest cannot replace continuous practice. Since 2015, Wu Hongyu has spent most of his time in the workshop.

Constantly practice, constantly face assessment, selection and elimination.

In 2018, he won the national first place in the CNC car project student group of the 8th National CNC Competition Final, and won the national scholarship from 2018 to 2019; in 2020, he participated in the CNC car project of the first China Vocational Skills Competition and won a gold medal. Qualified for the World Vocational Skills Competition.

He lived up to the hard work and sweat of himself and his team, and finally won the WorldSkills Championship.

Reporter:

Participating in such a world competition, on the one hand, sees the difference between yourself and others, and on the other hand is a process of finding confidence.

I can beat you, which shows that I still have a place to be stronger than you.

Wu Hongyu:

We have to learn from each other's good or bad, but we have to absorb the good, and come back and use their method to try it out. If his method is used, how will we make it.

Reporter:

We always say that the most advanced and sophisticated industries in the world are Germany, Japan, and Switzerland, represented by them.

Their craftsmanship is advanced, and the craftsmen also have the spirit of craftsmanship.

You beat them in the competition with them, what did you win by, and what did you win?

Wu Hongyu:

I think what we win is to persevere. Although we have never been better than them before, I believe that through our efforts and the common development of skilled talents, we can definitely beat them. We have great determination to do this. it is good.
