The two sides of the conflict in Ethiopia sign an agreement to start implementing the armistice

The Ethiopian government and Tigray forces signed on Saturday an agreement setting out the roadmap for the implementation of the peace agreement reached by the two sides in South Africa this month.

Representatives of the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front have been holding meetings in Nairobi since Monday to reach an agreement on various aspects related to the implementation of the peace agreement signed in Pretoria.

Saturday's announcement is expected to boost efforts by African Union mediators to end a two-year conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions in the Horn of Africa country.

Mediators said it would facilitate unimpeded humanitarian access, provide security guarantees for relief teams, and ensure the protection of civilians, in addition to forming a joint committee to oversee implementation.

The mediator Olusegun Obasanjo told a press conference prior to the signing that implementation will begin immediately.

The two sides said they are committed to the declaration, stressing that it is the only way to restore peace and stability.
