Egypt calls for sustainable solutions to the displacement problem due to climate change

Yesterday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed the need to push for sustainable solutions to the problem of displacement due to climate change and to expedite the mobilization of climate finance to sustain peace.

Shoukry said during his participation yesterday in the event to launch the Climate Change and Sustaining Peace Initiative, which was launched by the Egyptian presidency of the COP27 conference through the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding, and with the support of the United Nations Development Program and the African Union.

After the launch of the initiative from Sharm el-Sheikh, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said that Minister Shoukry highlighted during the event that it is the first of its kind that deals with the relationship between climate change and peace, in a way that reflects Egypt's constructive efforts in promoting multilateral action.

In his speech on this occasion, Shoukry explained that the initiative will be implemented through a number of axes, represented in strengthening the relationship between adaptation to climate change and peacebuilding, and the sustainability of peace through climate-resilient food systems.

On the other hand, Egypt signed seven agreements and memoranda of understanding with a number of international companies in the field of sustainability and emission reduction, within the framework of the United Nations Climate Summit “COP27” held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Tarek El-Molla, who signed the agreements and memoranda of understanding, stressed that this step aims to enhance the capabilities and capabilities of the Egyptian oil and gas industry in the field of carbon reduction and environmental sustainability of projects, and to benefit from the best experiences and practices provided by international companies in this field.

During the COP27 climate conference, more than 20 countries announced in a statement that they would pump billions of dollars into smart and environmentally friendly projects in an attempt to reduce the repercussions of climate warming.

Egypt and the United States also launched a support package worth more than $150 million to boost adaptation actions in Africa.

A statement issued yesterday by the presidency of "COP27" said that the package is part of the US emergency plan for adaptation and resilience.

For his part, the US special envoy for climate, John Kerry, said yesterday that some countries opposed mentioning the goal of the Paris climate agreement in 2015 to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius in the official text of the "Cop 27" summit.
