A bus crash in one of the Nile canals in Dakahlia Governorate, northern Egypt, today, Saturday, killed at least 24 people, according to an official toll, while the search for others continued.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health said - in a statement - that the bus fell into the Al-Riyah Al-Tawfiqi Canal in Dakahlia Governorate, and 18 ambulances were pushed to the site of the accident.

Reuters quoted security sources as saying that about 35 people were on the bus.

The sources stated that the accident occurred "as a result of speeding, and while the driver was trying to overtake a car in front of him, the steering wheel was broken and the bus fell into the canal."

And local media reported that the government will spend 50,000 pounds (about two thousand dollars) for the family of each deceased who supports a family, 25 thousand pounds (about a thousand dollars) for the deceased without families, and 5,000 pounds (about 200 dollars) for each injured person.
