The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced that a bus fell into a water canal in the Nile Delta yesterday, killing at least 21 people.

Dr. Sherif Makin, an official at the Ministry of Health, said that among the dead were three children.

The ministry said in its statement that the accident occurred in Dakahlia Governorate, located about 100 km northeast of the capital, Cairo.

The other injured passengers were taken to a local hospital.

A senior provincial police official said the driver may have lost control of the bus.

The Dakahlia Security Directorate received a report that a minibus (bus) had fallen in the waters of a canal on the Mansoura-Aga road in Dakahlia Governorate, while it was heading from Mit Ghamr to Mansoura with passengers.

According to the directorate, ambulances and river rescue vehicles rushed to the scene, and it was found that 21 people died, and 17 others were rescued.

Security sources said that about 38 people were on the bus, and that the accident occurred "as a result of speeding, and while the driver was trying to overtake a car in front of him, the steering wheel broke and the bus fell into the canal."
