Why, in the event of war, is destroying and plundering works of art one of the first objectives of the invading armies?

What does it mean to eliminate the culture of a nation, with the second aim of canceling its memory and annihilating its essence?

These are some of the questions at the heart of the documentary “The art of war”, an

Art Film Kairos production,

in collaboration with

Rai Documentari,

which will be broadcast one year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

 The documentary by

Marco Spagnoli

and

Tiziana Lupi

will be shot between Ukraine and Italy, to follow the work of those who, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, are working to secure the works of art and have already left the filming at Palazzo Venezia and at the Vittoriano, in Rome, and at the Abbey of Montecassino and at the Egyptian Museum in Turin. 

The narrator of the art historian Paolo Coen

who, with his words, will be the spokesperson for the glimmer of hope that has always been accompanied by art,

guiding the viewer on this journey .

And then art critics, museum directors and volunteer restorers convinced, even at the risk of their own lives, that art is a form of catharsis and salvation for mankind.

“The art of war”

launches a precise message:

saving art is equivalent to saving the history, memory and identity of a country.

The works of art are not only objects full of beauty as an end in themselves but symbolize

the legacy to be preserved and entrusted to the new generations, so that peace can be promoted and beauty educated
