An earthquake mourned Nepal on Wednesday.

Six people have been killed in a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that shook the west of the country, sending shock waves as far as New Delhi, announced the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS).

Its epicenter was near Dipayal, 340 km west of Kathmandu, at a depth of 15 km, according to the USGS.

The earthquake struck at 2 a.m.

Western Nepal had also already been shaken by a magnitude 4.8 earthquake at a depth of 10 km a few hours earlier, around 9 p.m.

Three deaths in one family

All six people died in the western district of Doti, including three members of one family, local police chief Rajendra Dhamala said.

Five other people were injured and are being treated at a local hospital.

Homes were damaged and local authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage.

Residents of India's capital New Delhi have posted videos on social media showing swaying lamps and hoardings shaken by the quake.

India's National Seismology Center reported a magnitude 6.3 earthquake.
