Caution is required in the Kremlin as in the White House, but half-word information from the Wall Street Journal is confirmed in Moscow as in Washington.

According to the American newspaper, it is Jake Sullivan, one of Joe Biden's closest advisers, who has spoken on several occasions in recent weeks with two key men in Vladimir Putin's entourage: Yuri Ouchakov, former ambassador to Washington, and especially Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of the Russian Security Council.

The objective of these talks is to prevent the conflict in Ukraine from spreading to other countries, and above all to prevent the use of nuclear weapons.

serious nuclear threat

We already knew that following Vladimir Putin's threatening statements on the subject of nuclear power last September, the United States had warned Russia of the devastating consequences of such a scenario.

But the holding of these interviews at such a high level had not yet filtered through.

This is a sign both of the seriousness of the threat, but also of the will of the two parties to stay in contact on this perilous subject for the whole of the European continent.

“

We maintain targeted contacts with the Americans on the questions that arise

,” confirmed this Tuesday morning, Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for American diplomacy.

It is in the interest of the United States to maintain contact

" with the Kremlin, for his part commented Jake Sullivan.
