Headed the UAE delegation to the Conference of Parties (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, headed the UAE delegation participating in the 27th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).

His Highness began his speech, during the opening session of the “Climate Summit” within the work of the 27th session of the Conference of the States Parties, in the presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, and a number of state leaders, presidents and governments from around the world, by endorsing the Egyptian President’s call to work to end the Ukrainian crisis, to achieve peace and security and stability in the world.

His Highness said that the world faces complex challenges, and addressing them requires joint action and international cooperation, indicating that the future of future generations depends on the decisions, actions and steps we take today.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan called for unifying international efforts to confront the challenges of climate change and reduce its repercussions that affect all countries of the world without exception.

His Highness thanked sister Egypt and the General Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for organizing the conference and directing the world's attention to the most prominent priorities related to climate change.

His Highness said, "We meet at a critical time for our planet, as our world faces many challenges, the most important of which is climate change, which is affecting stability and security in the world.

Since we only have one land, it is imperative that we unite our efforts to tackle this challenge through climate action, which we view as an opportunity to innovate, find solutions and diversify the economy.”

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed the UAE's commitment to ensuring energy security while reducing emissions, explaining that the country's oil and gas are among the least carbon-intensive in the world, and that work is continuing to reduce emissions in this vital sector, in line with the vision of The founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul.

His Highness pointed out that “the UAE is a responsible energy provider, and it will continue in this role, as long as the world needs oil and gas.

By virtue of geology, oil and gas in the UAE are among the least carbon-intensive types in the world, and we will continue to focus on reducing emissions in this sector, and this is not new, as the founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, directed to stop gas flaring. Several decades ago, he established the pillars of sustainability in the UAE in order to preserve the environment and natural resources.

Following this approach, decades ago, we began working to diversify our economy... and build capacities in renewable and clean energy to stimulate sustainable economic and social growth.”

His Highness explained that the UAE was the first country in the region to announce a strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. He also touched on the recently launched partnership between the UAE and the United States of America, with the aim of enhancing energy security and supporting climate action, by investing $100 billion to build projects for production 100 gigawatts of clean energy around the world.

His Highness stressed the many benefits and gains achieved by investment initiatives in clean technology, climate action, and the increasing economic and development opportunities they provide, which ultimately benefit future generations by securing a sustainable future for our planet.

His Highness said: "These initiatives create new sectors, new skills, and new jobs, and help keep hope in avoiding global warming."

His Highness added that the UAE will continue to adhere to the approach of building bridges of cooperation and communication with the international community, and the principle of continuity and perseverance in climate action.

His Highness said: "As we prepare to host the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of Parties in (Expo City, Dubai) during 2023, we will focus on supporting the implementation of the outcomes of previous conferences, as well as on completing the first global assessment of progress in the Paris Climate Agreement.

We will ensure the participation and inclusion of all, including the appropriate representation of women, the involvement of young people from all over the world, their energies, and their passion for sustainable solutions.”

His Highness the Head of State invited everyone in the world to "cooperate in finding practical solutions that contribute to addressing losses and damages, and creating opportunities for sustainable economic growth for people everywhere."

His Highness concluded his speech by renewing his thanks to the brothers in Egypt, and said, “I wish success for our joint efforts, because the dangers of climate change target everyone without exception.

The future of our children and grandchildren depends on the steps we take today.”

And economic glory in the energy sector, pointing to what His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized, that the UAE is continuing its role as a responsible supplier of low-emission and clean energy, in a way that ensures continued growth and provides the necessary resources to support climate action.

Al-Jaber said that the speech of His Highness the President of the State, made it clear that "the UAE adopts the approach of continuity and perseverance, and that we will support brotherly Egypt in its presidency of the COP27 Conference of Parties, and we will cooperate with the international community to accommodate the priorities of all parties, and we will focus on linking results and outcomes between the Sharm El-Sheikh Conference and the UAE Climate Conference." COP28, which we will host in Dubai Expo next year, which we will make sure is inclusive and includes everyone, to ensure broad participation in shaping the features of climate action in the future.”

He explained that the next session of this conference is of particular importance, as it will witness the first assessment of the global outcome of progress in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, and we will focus on consensus and raising the ceiling of ambition to achieve real progress in various tracks, including supporting countries most vulnerable to the repercussions of climate change.
