SVT has previously reported on municipalities where they choose to turn off parts or all of the street lighting during certain times to save electricity.

In Laholm, for example, two out of three street lights are turned off.

A decision that has been criticized for creating insecurity and for being dangerous to traffic.

The moisture destroys the lamps

Now the Traffic Office in Gothenburg believes that switching off is not the best way to save electricity either, but that you save more if you dim the lighting instead.

At certain times of the day, you can let the lights go full blast, while at other times when it doesn't need to be so lit, you can turn down the power.

- There are only advantages to dimming down, on the one hand we get more error reports if we switch off because people think they are broken and on the other hand the fixtures feel better in terms of moisture and the like.

No new way to save

Saving money by adjusting street lighting in one way or another is nothing new.

During the 80s and 90s, it was common to turn off parts of the lighting.

However, the type of incandescent light that was then used in the lamps were real energy thieves when compared to today's LED lights.

In addition, it was not possible to dim the light of that time, which is therefore not a problem now.
