The Iranian Foreign Ministry denied what was reported by the American Wall Street Journal that Iran poses a threat to a country in the region, and said it was a "baseless accusation."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that the American newspaper's report is biased, and aims to create a negative atmosphere against Iran and destroy its positive dialogues with countries in the region.

The Wall Street Journal had quoted Saudi and American officials that Saudi Arabia had exchanged intelligence information with the United States warning of an imminent Iranian attack on targets inside the kingdom.

The newspaper - quoting these sources - stated that US forces in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region were placed on high alert.

Media campaign

In this context, the Russian Foreign Ministry considered that what it described as the media campaign launched by the Western media could lead to a dangerous escalation of tension in the Gulf.

The ministry added in a statement that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and according to the statement, the Russian minister commented on the "damage of the media campaign launched by Western media."

On Tuesday, the United States expressed concern about unspecified threats from Iran against Saudi Arabia, and said it would not hesitate to respond if necessary.
