Danish Prime Minister resigns in preparation for forming a new coalition

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen submitted the resignation of her government to Queen Margrethe II yesterday, in a move she announced after the parliamentary elections on Tuesday.

Video clips broadcast by the Danish media showed Frederiksen, who belongs to the Social Democratic Party, arriving yesterday morning at the Amalienborg Palace, the Queen's residence in Copenhagen, to leave it quickly afterwards, without speaking to the press.

In a discussion with leaders of other parliamentary parties, she later confirmed that she had submitted the resignation request, adding that it was clear that the government could not continue in its current form.

Frederiksen has led Denmark since 2019 with a minority Social Democrat government, which relied on support in parliament from left-wing parties.

The step paves the way for determining who is the leader of the party who will be tasked with forming the new government.
