UAE: Counter-terrorism regulations and policies are not progressing at the same pace as terrorist threats

Her Excellency Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, explained that regulatory frameworks for combating terrorism and political discussions are not progressing at the same pace as terrorist threats around the world.

This came in a speech delivered by Her Excellency before the special meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council held in New Delhi.

Her Excellency said, "The tremendous technological progress has multiplied the terrorist capabilities before our eyes," adding that "it has become imperative for all of us to unite our efforts and work hard together to address the root causes of extremism in all its forms."

Her Excellency noted that terrorist groups exploited the advances in commercial drone technology to carry out more deadly attacks, noting that these drones developed the capabilities of terrorist groups to carry out cross-border activities, which created a trans-regional challenge.

His Excellency Al-Hashemi called for strengthening the regulatory and legislative frameworks to prevent the Internet from becoming a tool to empower terrorists, and noted the continued spread of extremist content on the Internet despite the progress made in the tools used to detect it.

She stressed the need to develop new financial tools to curb the financing of terrorism, and indicated the UAE's full commitment to implementing the regulations to combat money laundering and combating terrorist financing, and is also working to strengthen the structure and frameworks for confronting such crimes.
