In 2004, after Vladimir Putin was re-elected as President of Russia, he abolished gubernatorial elections in the country.

Instead, he would appoint the governors himself.

This was one of the first steps towards growing power for the Russian president who, as it turns out, time and time again turns out to be exactly Vladimir Putin.

After a couple of years as prime minister, he returned to the presidency in 2012, and after a law change last year, Putin can now continue to lead Russia until the year 2036.
