According to him, 95% of Japanese oil imports come from the Middle East, so the Sakhalin-1 project is important for the country's energy security.

“Following the results of studying the details of the decree of the President of Russia and due procedures, we are aimed at maintaining interests in the Sakhalin-1 project,” RIA Novosti quoted Nishimura as saying at a press conference.

He added that he had made a corresponding request to SODECO, which has a stake in the project.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the application of additional economic measures in the fuel and energy sector in connection with the unfriendly actions of some states.

The document provides for the transfer of the operator of the Sakhalin-1 project to Russian jurisdiction, as was the case with the Sakhalin-2 project.
