Leaving the lights on at the end of the day in Parisian offices and businesses will now be subject to verbalization, or even administrative sanctions.

From this Tuesday, November 1, the city of Paris enjoins all economic actors and associations to put an end to the lighting of their premises and sign at the end of the day.

Also a ban on illuminated billboards that remained on all night.

From December 1, they must be turned off between 11:45 p.m. and 6 a.m.

These measures are part of the energy sobriety plan initiated in October by the government to deal with the possible shortage of gas or electricity this winter.

This provides for extinction throughout the territory from June 1, 2023. Panels intended for information related to public services, road safety and access to rights will be an exception, specifies the text.

Public lighting cut at midnight

Other cities such as Lyon, Toulouse or Clermont-Ferrand and Strasbourg have already started to

cut public lighting for

several hours at night.

But according to the ecological transition agency, turning off the lights at night is not the best way to save energy.

Ademe recommends rather to modernize the current system, very energy-consuming, in particular by using LED bulbs.

An investment that would reduce the budget allocated to public lighting by 50% to 80%.
