The UAE has expressed its sincere condolences and solidarity with the Republic of Iraq, over the victims of a fuel tanker explosion in Baghdad, which resulted in dozens of victims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed its sincere condolences to the government and brotherly people of Iraq, and to the families of the victims in this painful affliction, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.

According to Iraqi security and medical sources, at least nine people were killed and 13 others injured, as a result of a fuel tanker explosion Saturday night inside a garage in eastern Baghdad.

Baghdad Operations Commander Ahmed Salim said that a gas tank explosion east of Baghdad resulted in nine civilian deaths and 13 wounded.

He stressed that "the accident of the explosion of the tanker is technical, not an act of terrorism."

The accident took place in an open parking garage, near a soccer field and a café in a residential neighborhood of Baghdad.

Following the accident, President Abdellatif Rashid announced, in a tweet, that he was following "with interest the painful consequences of the tanker explosion accident, which caused casualties and damage."

He called on the concerned authorities to "carry out a thorough investigation of the incident and hold the negligent to account."
