Nearly four million people are affected by power cuts after recent Russian strikes on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday.

"In many cities and districts of our country, cuts have been introduced to stabilize" the situation, he said in his daily address.

“Almost four million Ukrainians are currently facing these restrictions,” he added.

Multiplication of Russian strikes against energy infrastructure

These are the city of "kyiv and its region" as well as the provinces of Zhitomyr (center-west), Poltava, Cherkasy and Kirovograd in the center, Rivne (west), Kharkiv (east), Cherniguiv and Sumy in the north, he said.

Earlier in the day, the private Ukrainian operator DTEK announced "unprecedented" power cuts for "the next few days" in the capital and its region, due to major damage inflicted on the Ukrainian energy system by strikes Russians.

For more than two weeks, Russia has been stepping up strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which caused the destruction of at least a third of its capacities in this area, just before winter.

As a result, and in order to avoid blackouts, power cuts lasting a few hours have since been imposed daily in many regions.
