Closed for a year to the public, the tower of the Saint-Michel basilica in Bordeaux will experience a second youth.

His spire will be restored.

To achieve this, a huge scaffolding of 700 tons will be installed.

Particularity, the latter will not rest on the monument.

It is one of the tallest steeples in France.

And yet, for more than a year, the tower of the Saint-Michel basilica in Bordeaux has been closed to the public.

And for good reason: its spire threatens to collapse.

So, to remedy this, a huge scaffolding will be built around the tower.

A technological feat for this scaffolding, which will weigh around 700 tonnes.

This installation, resistant to the wind, will be entirely independent of the structure of the monument.

"We are going to literally enshrine the monument in a scaffolding spacesuit, which will be independent. It does not rely on the monument, it relies well on the ground", confirms at the microphone of Europe 1 the assistant to the Mayor of Bordeaux

in charge of creation and cultural expressions, Dimitri Boutleux.

"Pride"

“It will clearly change the silhouette a little” of the building, he specifies.

"And then, in the landscape of Bordeaux, there will be a modification with this somewhat significant scaffolding. But it is a source of pride to take care of this monument, which clearly needs it", enthuses the elected official. .

The people of Bordeaux will have to be patient before seeing the Saint-Michel tower again in broad daylight.

The work of the building should last four years, for a total cost of just over 11 million euros.
