Today, Wednesday, Pope Francesco met the family of the late colleague Sherine Abu Akleh, at the conclusion of what is known as the weekly general meeting.

During the meeting, the Pope addressed the worshipers in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

He expressed his sympathy to Shirin's family.

For his part, Tony Abu Aqleh stressed the need to hold accountable those responsible for targeting and killing his sister Shireen.

The family also met with the Secretary of the Vatican City, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who received a message from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in which he touched on the escalation and the suffering of the Palestinian people as a result of the occupation practices, including the killing of our colleague Shireen.

Sherine Abu Aqleh was born in the occupied city of Jerusalem in 1971, to a Palestinian Christian family, who hails from the city of Bethlehem in the West Bank.

The Al-Jazeera journalist witnessed key events in Palestine, including the Al-Aqsa Intifada (the second intifada) between 2000 and 2004 and the invasion of Jenin and Tulkarm camp in 2002, in addition to the raids and military operations in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli occupation assassinated our colleague Shireen Abu Aqleh on May 11, while she was covering the storming of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, which caused outrage in human rights and media circles at the Arab and international levels.
