The researchers have studied the walking habits of 20 middle-aged men and women of normal weight – ten men and ten women – and how much energy is expended when they walk.

The results show that regular everyday exercise can be sufficient to achieve optimal health effects and, in the long run, counteract the risk of disease and premature death.

- If you walk 6,000 transport steps a day five days a week and have a normal weight, you reach an optimal level of activity to achieve health effects, says Peter Schantz, professor at the School of Gymnastics and Sports in Stockholm.

Walking more than 6,000 steps provides no additional health benefits, research shows.
