Foreign Policy magazine revealed that Russia has opened channels of communication with former members of the Special Forces in Afghanistan, seeking to join them in the fight in Ukraine.

The magazine quoted US officials, who did not reveal their identities, that Moscow is targeting the officers and soldiers whom the United States failed during its withdrawal from Afghanistan in the summer of last year, and who are still in neighboring countries and waiting for travel documents to settle in America.

A former security official in Afghanistan confirmed this news and praised the Afghan Special Forces, saying that their joining Ukraine would change the course of the war on the ground.

Sources suggested that the number of Special Forces soldiers left behind by the United States ranged between 20,000 and 30,000.

Russia has launched a military attack on its neighbor Ukraine since February 24, and has already annexed several regions of it after referendums in which Western countries questioned, which imposed severe economic sanctions on Moscow, and provided support to Kiev.

The United States announced at the end of August of last year that it had completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan, nearly 20 years after it invaded the country in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
