The Kremlin has said there is nothing to anticipate improving relations with Britain under the leadership of its new prime minister, Rishi Sunak.

"At the moment, we see no reason to hope for any positive changes in the foreseeable future," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

"Russia remains open and ready to discuss the most difficult issues at the negotiating table, but not at the expense of our interests," he added.

Russian officials have expressed their satisfaction with Liz Truss stepping down as Britain's prime minister, and before that, Boris Johnson, but they have repeatedly said that they see no chance of improving relations between London and Moscow "whatever occupies 10 Downing Street."

Sunak became Britain's youngest prime minister in two centuries, taking office on Tuesday, succeeding Terrace.

Britain has been one of the Western countries that has supported Kiev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since the start of the Russian war on Ukraine on February 24.

Sunak is Britain's third prime minister since then.
