The cholera

situation in

Haiti

is increasingly alarming

: the United Nations has expressed concern about what, in the formal language of the official, has been defined as a "marked increase" in infections but which now appears, in fact, as a

dangerous explosion

of suspected cases , which nearly doubled in a few days.

"Until a few days ago the increase was gradual, but now we are seeing clear and worrying growth, and the situation is getting complicated," wrote the UN humanitarian coordinator in the country,

Ulrika Richardson

.

The disease, although fatal, is "preventable and treatable", so "immediate action is needed," she added, underlining the "swift and decisive" response of authorities and NGOs.

"According to the Haitian Ministry of Health, the number of suspected cases almost

doubled between 20 and 23 October, from about 1000 to almost 2000"

, underlined the spokesman of the Glass Building

Stephane Dujarric

.

Specifying that "according to Unicef, children under 14 represent almost half of these suspected cases", and the lack of fuel is making the work of humanitarian workers "much more difficult".
