At least two people were killed and six wounded when a gunman opened fire at a high school in the city, the police chief of the US city of St. Louis said Monday.

Commander Mike Mack said police exchanged fire with the gunman, killing him.

He added that the police responded to a report from "Central High School for Visual and Performing Arts" at 9:10 am that there was a gunman at the school.

And he continued - during a press conference - after the incident, when the police arrived, the students were rushing outside the school and told the officers that the gunman had a "long weapon."

About two weeks ago, 5 people, including a police officer, were killed by a gunman who shot them in a residential area in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the southeastern United States.

The police arrested a suspect, and the mayor of the city explained in a press conference that the police confirmed the deaths of 5 people, and said, "This is a sad and tragic day for the city of Raleigh."

In the United States, about 49,000 people were shot dead in 2021, compared to 45,000 in 2020. These two deaths are the highest ever in the country's history.

This data means that more than 130 people die in the United States every day from gunshots, more than half of them by suicide.
