Mexico: downgraded to a tropical storm, hurricane Roslyn kills at least two people

Hurricane Roslyn hit the Pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Nayarit on Sunday, October 23.

Categorized as a Category 4 hurricane, it was downgraded to a tropical storm in the evening.

The latest report reports two deaths and extensive damage.

A 74-year-old man is believed to have died in the village of Mexcaltitán, in the state of Nayarit after being struck by a beam on the head and a 39-year-old woman after a wall collapsed in the commune of Rosamorada.

Exceptional winds hit the Mexican coast on Sunday morning (local time) with maximum averages at 195 km/h and gusts at 240 km/h.

Intense rains were recorded in the western states of Nayarit and Jalisco.

They caused floods and mudslides that still paralyze several villages.

Heavy rains are still ongoing in Sinaloa and Durango states.

After the passage of the hurricane, the authorities worked to clear roads and to restore electricity services which affected more than 150,000 people.

Those who had been evacuated preventively returned to their homes.

First major hurricane of the season in the Pacific

Roslyn stunned Mexico on Saturday when it moved closer to shore during the day

A hurricane of category greater than three on the Saffir-Simpson scale is considered a

 major " event.

It was the first hurricane to reach this strength in the Pacific this season. 

But since he is on Mexican lands, the cyclone has lost its intensity.

Downgraded to category 1 on Sunday at midday, local time, it continues its course towards the northeast.

In the evening in Mexico, the remnants of the hurricane passed through the state of Coahuila and it is expected to dissipate towards the southern United States, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the United States.
