New British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged yesterday to bring "stability and unity" to the United Kingdom, which is facing an economic crisis, after his election as the new leader of the Conservative Party.

In his first statement after being chosen for his new position, he said: "We need stability and unity, and bringing the party and the country together will be my top priority.

The UK is a great country, but there is no doubt that we face a profound economic challenge.”

King Charles will ask Sunak, one of Westminster's richest politicians, to form a government, succeeding Liz Terrass, the outgoing party leader after just 44 days in office.

Sunak beat centrist Penny Mordaunt, who did not get enough support from MPs to enter the contest, while his rival, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, withdrew, saying he could no longer unite the party.

It is the responsibility of Sunak, 42, a former finance minister who will be Britain's third prime minister in less than two months, to restore stability to a country reeling from years of political and economic turmoil.
