Chad bans protests marking initial end of transition

The opposition and civil society intend to demonstrate against the continuation of the transition in Chad, which was initially scheduled to end on October 20.

High-risk day in Chad, where Thursday October 20 marks the end of the 18 months of transition decreed by the military council after the death of President Idriss Deby in April 2021. While the inclusive and sovereign national dialogue granted two more years of transition to the current leader Mahamat Idriss Deby, political parties and civil society associations have called for demonstrations.

But the government banned the gatherings, calling it an “ 

attempt at armed insurrection

”.

," the government said in a statement.

The text adds that “

1,500 young people have been trained and trained to carry out targeted breaks against certain public buildings and personalities of the Republic

 ”.

On Wednesday afternoon, the opponent Succès Masra called on the international community to no longer recognize the transitional regime from October 20.

Before him, several political parties and civil society organizations had called for demonstrations against

the transitional regime on

Thursday.

But these demonstrations were banned by order of the Minister of Public Security.

The member countries of the European Union, for their part, have called for dialogue and respect for human rights and freedoms.

Before the mobilization day, shots were heard on Wednesday evening around the headquarters of

the Transformers party, led by Succès Masra

, in the seventh arrondissement of Ndjamena.
