More greenery, less cement!

In the sights of environmental and heritage defenders gathered on the eve of the C40 summit in Buenos Aires, the local urban plan of the Argentine capital, says RFI correspondent in Buenos Aires,

Théo Conscience.

"

It calls for all lots in the city to be 89% buildable, which almost wipes out the space dedicated to the lungs of the blocks

."

These lungs that Ana Bas, president of the organization "Stop demolitions" tells us about, are these green spaces located in the center of the blocks, which have so far escaped the policy of "

systematic concreting

" also denounced by María Angélica Di Giacomo, president of an NGO dedicated to the protection of the city's trees: "

We are losing permeable and vegetated soils, that is to say that we are doing exactly the opposite of what we have needed to support the climate crisis

”.

This last alert also on the fate reserved for them by the local authorities: “

The trees are pruned systematically.

Between felling and pruning, we lose about 30 trees per day

”.

A loss which, according to her, is not compensated by the new trees planted each year by the town hall.

We cannot wait thirty years for these trees to grow, because the climate crisis is here and now

The discussions of the C40 in Buenos Aires want to highlight good practices concerning, for example, the place of nature in the city, biodiversity and the way to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Cities, in direct contact with citizens and their daily lives, will thus try to propose concrete and effective solutions.
