Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h50, October 19, 2022

Listen to the story of the painter Rodin and his passion for Egypt told by the historian Virginie Girod, in an unpublished story in two episodes, in partnership with the Rodin Museum on the occasion of the exhibition "Dream of Egypt ".

In 1897, Auguste Rodin completed his Balzac, a plaster statue commissioned by Emile Zola and inspired by monumental Egyptian sculpture.

And like other works before it, this one will provoke an avalanche of criticism.

In this episode of the podcast "At the heart of history" produced by Europe 1 Studio, Virginie Girod goes back to the beginning of the artist's story, who joined the National School of Decorative Arts at the age of 14 but who sees the doors of the temple of academicism closing in front of him.

Auguste Rodin was born in 1840 in Paris.

He is a silent, shy and very myopic child, who is considered a bad student at school.

However, very quickly, drawing entered his life: from childhood, he knew he wanted to become an artist.

But how did he begin his career strictly speaking?

What is the first work that allows him to be noticed?

And how does he experience this increasingly strong but critical notoriety?

Virginie Girod retraces the career of Auguste, the sculptor who gave life to clay and who soon caused a scandal.

This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.
