A 34-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday for a violent attack committed in Reims (Marne) on October 9.

The defendant had stolen the telephone of a 40-year-old man in an inebriated state before beating him.

A video surveillance camera having filmed the scene had made it possible to determine that the victim had been beaten up for a minute, says

.

The 40-year-old had had his nose and sternum fractured by kicks.

He suffered from a cervical sprain and his vital prognosis had been engaged for a time.

The investigation initially focused on attempted murder.

The respondent had been arrested on the spot, unlike his two accomplices who had fled when the municipal police arrived.

Finally judged for "robbery with violence", the defendant denied the theft of the telephone and justified the blows by his desire to wake up the victim.

The man whose criminal record includes 38 previous convictions had yet been found with the smartphone on him.
