A

Su-34

that had just taken off from the military airport of the "

southern military district

"

crashed into a building in Yeysk

, a Russian port city of 90,000 inhabitants on the southern shores of the Azov Sea,

opposite the city of Mariupol

.

The Moscow Ministry of Defense confirmed that the plane would

catch fire

, possibly from engine

failure

, after takeoff and later crash into a nine-story building in a residential area.

The

two pilots would have saved themselves

by launching from the aircraft before the crash.

Local emergency officials said at least

two residents were killed and 19 others were hospitalized

, four of them in

serious condition

.

The authorities have reserved emergency rooms in local hospitals and have taken off medical planes.

At least 17 apartments were affected by the fire and around

100 residents were evacuated

.

The Kremlin said Russian President

Vladimir Putin

was informed of the incident and ordered health and emergency ministers along with the local governor to go to the site.

Hours after the incident, regional governor

Veniamin Kondratyev

said the emergency services managed to contain the fire, making the evacuation of residents to adjacent buildings superfluous.

Videos posted on Russian messaging app channels showed a

huge fire

engulfing an apartment building and loud explosions due to the apparent

detonation of the warplane's weapons

and

fuel

contained in the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The Su-34 is a supersonic twin-engine bomber widely used by the Russian air force.

The aircraft was also used during the war in Syria as well as in the fighting in Ukraine.

Monday's incident marked the

10th

reported noncombat incident of a Russian warplane since Moscow sent its troops to Ukraine.
