After that, a court in Beijing recognized that he was "involved in spying activities" and sentenced Mr. Suzuki to six years in prison.



According to Japanese government officials, Mr. Suzuki was released from prison on the 11th and returned to Japan.



Suzuki said he had visited China about 200 times and taught at a Chinese university before he was detained.



In China, since 2015, the year after the anti-espionage law came into force, at least 16 Japanese have been detained for being involved in spying activities.



At least nine of the Japanese detained so far have been convicted, making him the fourth Japanese to return after being sentenced and serving time in prison.
