- Everything that is happening now in Ukraine was going on in Chechnya for 20 years, says Tor, who wants to remain anonymous to protect his family in Chechnya.

The Russian Republic of Chechnya has contributed many soldiers to the front and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov keeps a high profile in the war.

This week he is said to have been promoted to general, at least he claims so himself.

He has criticized the Russian army for its failures in the war and urged Putin to resort to nuclear weapons.

Fight for the other side

But for the Chechen people, it is far from obvious that they support the Russian invasion.

For many years the republic fought to be free from Russia.

And many Chechens have chosen to fight on the Ukrainian side in the war, despite the risks involved.

SVT Nyheter has met representatives from the Dzhokhar Dudayev battalion - one of the two Chechen battalions fighting on Ukraine's side in the war.

"We are so tired of them"

They fight not only for Ukraine, but also for a free Chechnya.

In the long run, their struggle is about liberating the inhabitants of all the various ethnic republics that are believed to be living under the oppression of Russian imperialism.

- We Chechens, and other peoples such as Ingush, Dagestani, Buryats, Yakuts, Ukrainians, have been forced to obey the Russians for so many years.

We are so tired of them.

No people should have to live in the same country as Russians, says Tor.
