Clashes erupted today, Sunday, between Palestinian youths and the Israeli occupation forces in the Shuafat camp, northeast of occupied Jerusalem, while the occupation forces continue to cordon off the camp and raid and search operations, in search of the perpetrator of the attack, in which an Israeli soldier was killed and 3 other soldiers were wounded.

Eyewitnesses said that the occupation forces stormed "Dahiyat al-Salam" in the Shuafat refugee camp, and raided the homes of citizens and a mosque.

The occupation forces continue to close the entrances to the town of Anata, Dahiyat Al-Salam, and Shuafat refugee camp, after the shooting attack carried out yesterday, Saturday night, by a Palestinian gunman at the military checkpoint at the entrance to Shuafat refugee camp, which resulted in the killing of a female soldier in the Military Police, and the injury of 3 other soldiers.

Residents of the area say that the occupation forces have closed all the crossings, and have prevented - since Sunday morning - entry and exit from the Shuafat camp and the town of Anata, including workers, patients and school students.

prevent ambulance

The Palestinian Red Crescent Ambulance Society said - this morning, Sunday - that "the Israeli occupation forces are preventing ambulance crews from entering the areas of Shuafat and Anata," which are close to the site of the attack.

Shuafat camp is the only camp in the West Bank that is located within the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem, so its residents obtain civil IDs belonging to occupied Jerusalem.

Military helicopters belonging to the Israeli police are involved in the search for the attacker, and large forces from the Jerusalem Police and Border Police, as well as special units of the police, forces from the Shin Bet security service and the Israeli army are chasing the perpetrator.

Commenting on the killing of an Israeli soldier in the camp attack, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said that "Israel will not be silent and will not rest" until it holds accountable those he described as "hateful killers." And Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz stated that Tel Aviv will continue to fight what he called "terrorism" in All sectors, and with all the force required, indicating that he will arrest the perpetrator of the operation and everyone who provided him with assistance.

Investigation results

According to the results of the initial investigations of the Israeli police, the fire was fired from inside a car as well as from a person who got off in the area, and the attackers managed to escape. The chariot opens fire and runs back to the camp, while the chauffeur of the chariot escapes.

The Shuafat attack comes in light of the "Operation Breaking Waves" launched by the occupation army in the past months, to pursue those suspected of involvement in activities against the occupation forces and settlers in the West Bank.

The Magistrate's Court in occupied Jerusalem has extended the detention of 4 Palestinians, pending investigation, on charges of their suspected participation and assistance in the shooting that was carried out by a Palestinian gunman at Shuafat checkpoint.

UN Coordinator

On the other hand, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wencesland, expressed his concern over what he called "the deteriorating security situation in the West Bank."

He said that - since the beginning of this year - at least 100 Palestinians, including children, have been killed, amid a significant increase in Israeli military operations in the West Bank, including "A" area under the Palestinian Authority.

Wenesland added, in a statement, that 16 Israelis were killed during the same period inside Israel, in a wave - he called - "terrorist attacks" carried out by Palestinians and Israeli Arabs, as he put it.

The UN Special Coordinator explained that the escalation of violence in the West Bank is fueling a climate of fear, hatred and anger, calling for the need to immediately reduce tension, to open the way for decisive initiatives aimed at creating a viable political horizon, as he described it.
