Paris and Algiers confirm their desire to "densify" their "renewed partnership"

Less than two months after President Emmanuel Macron, the French Prime Minister has been in Algeria since Sunday, for her first international trip.

Two-day official visit by Elisabeth Borne, accompanied by around fifteen French ministers, to continue the warming between the two countries, after months of diplomatic tensions.

“A step to build even closer cooperation between France and Algeria”, according to the head of the French government.

that Elisabeth Borne began her visit to Algiers, where she was welcomed by her Algerian counterpart, Aimene Benabderrahmane.

Together, they then chaired a meeting of the high-level intergovernmental committee.

The first since 2017. A dozen texts have been signed, which concern in particular the fields of industry, tourism, crafts, agriculture, the creation of start-ups and cultural projects.

Nothing, on the other hand, on gas or on visas for the moment, subjects of tension between Paris and Algiers, since France decided to divide their number by two, a year ago.

Regarding the memory file, another delicate issue between the two countries, Elisabeth Borne announced that the composition of the commission of historians supposed to work on colonization and the war in Algeria should be known in the coming days.

This intergovernmental committee is "

 an unprecedented opportunity to begin to translate the vision of our heads of state into action 

", welcomed Elisabeth Borne, referring to

the relaunch of the bilateral relationship

decided at the end of August by Emmanuel Macron and his host Abdelmajid Tebboune. .

She mentioned three main pillars “

 for this renewed partnership

 ”: the economy to “

 develop trade, innovation and create jobs

”;

mobility and visas;

and youth through increased educational and cultural cooperation.
