We must save Private Liz Truss.

Ministers on Sunday urged the Conservatives to unite behind British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who arrived in Downing Street a month ago but was already strongly contested.

“The choice for my colleagues is simple: support Liz or you will have Keir Starmer,” the Labor opposition leader, wrote Home Secretary Suella Braverman in the Sun On Sunday.

"Those working with Labor to undermine our Prime Minister are putting the Tories' chances of winning the next election in real jeopardy," she added.

Polls give an unprecedented lead to the Labor opposition two years before the next general election.

“Two years to prove”

Nadhim Zahawi called for quick unity.

"Delay is our greatest enemy," the cabinet member said on Sky News.

“We have two years to prove to the country that we can keep our promises.

Liz Truss succeeded Boris Johnson in early September, but she is already strongly contested within her party.

Under pressure from its majority, the government gave up on Monday to abolish the highest tax bracket, a volte-face which has further weakened it.

There are also divisions over social benefits, whether they should be income-tested or inflation-tested.

Penny Mordaunt, a former rival of Liz Truss in the nomination race, and Environment Minister Ranil Jayawardena also called for unity.

"You can't have an election for a new leadership, pick a new party leader and then immediately discuss removing him," ex-minister Nadine Dorries told the BBC.
