Trotto Derby

The history of the Italian derby of the trot

The first edition dates back to 1926, when it was disputed at the Roman racecourse of Villa Glori with the name of "Derby Reale del Trotto", which saw the victory of a foal named

Malacoda

with a time of 1.29.2 over the total distance of 2000 meters.

Throughout the 1920s, the competition highlighted the mastery of the most famous 'drivers' of the time, even though the results in terms of speed were still fair: the best time was in fact that of

Palla

who in 1927 won in 1.26.

In the

in the 1930s, the Derby was renamed the “Grand Prix of the King and Emperor” and the meters to be covered were first brought to 2400 and then to 2500

After the last Roman edition in wartime

was won, in 1943

by the famous

Mystery

led by Ugo Bottoni, the race moved to

Milan, where in the two-year period 1944/45 it was renamed the “Breeding Grand Prix”.

In 1946 he then arrived in Naples, finding the name of Derby again.

In 1947, finally, the Italian Derby del Trotto returned to Rome, in time to witness, in 1950, the unforgettable victory of

Altissimo,

 with 1.24.4.

Later, with the introduction of the autostart in 1952, the era of the Villa Glori racecourse ended

,

which was  demolished to make room for the Olympic Village, and a decade later

the challenge moved to the Tor di Valle track, where we started racing at 2100

meters: the distance that will become the classic one of the Derby.

However, it is only from the second half of the 70s that the Derby will witness the increasingly rapid rise of young champions with amazing speed skills.

In fact, the 90s opened with the victory of

Mint di Jesolo

and his 1.15.5, to reach an immeasurable

Varenne

who in 1998 triumphed in the Derby with 1.13.9 and which will only be unhinged in 2005 by

Fairbank Gi

 with 1.13. 0.

Finally, in 2014

,

the Derby is disputed for the first time

on the new trotting track built at the

Capannelle Hippodrome

, where a new season full of elegance and emotions opens.
