The

Gambian Police

announced this Saturday the opening of an investigation after the death of

66 children who died

of acute kidney failure, which could have been caused by

syrups made in India.

"The Gambian police have set up an investigation group tasked with immediately investigating and identifying those responsible for this irreparable loss and bringing them to justice," the security body said in a statement.

The group is made up of senior police officials with the necessary skills, said the source, who asked the population to remain calm.

The president,

Adama Barrow,

had assured on Friday night that "the government [would act] to clarify the events."

The death of 66 children in the last three months caused shock in the small

West African country.

The Gambian authorities suspect that the cause could be found in some

paracetamol and promethazine syrups,

which they ordered withdrawn from the market.

The

World Health Organization (WHO)

issued an alert on Wednesday and recommended that the four suspected cough and cold syrups, manufactured by the Indian laboratory

Maiden Pharmaceuticals,

be withdrawn, which "could be related" to the deaths recorded in Gambia.
